GM, Pilot and EVgo Expand Fast-Charging Network to Over 130 Locations in 25 States
General Motors (GM, Financials), Pilot Company, and EVgo (EVGO, Financials) rolled out more than 130 fast-charging stations for electric vehicles in over 25 U.S. states, as part of a national collaboration aimed at improving long-distance EV travel.
Beginning in 2022, the network comprises installations at Pilot and Flying J travel hubs. The businesses want to construct up to 2,000 fast chargers at 500 locations throughout the country. These sites along key roads such I-75 between Michigan and Georgia as well as corridors linking cities including Detroit and Cleveland or Dallas and Nashville.
Some cars may recharge in as short as 15 minutes using EVgo's high-powered equipment, which provides up to 350 kilowatts. The network lets compatible EVs instantly start and pay for charging via Plug-and-Charge technology, hence bypassing extra procedures. General Motors drivers may use their mobile applications to access this function.
The stations want to provide 24-hour access to well-lit spaces with facilities like contemporary bathrooms, on-site eating, and free Wi-Fi, thereby going beyond charging. Many sites also have pull-through charging to fit trailers and bigger cars.
The growth follows increasing electric car use. The businesses claim U.S. EV sales in 2024 totaled 1.3 million, with fourth-quarter deliveries up 15% over the same time a year earlier. In the quarter, General Motors claimed a 50% rise in EV sales.
Executives from the three firms said the infrastructure growth is meant to alleviate range anxiety and provide access for EV drivers in rural, suburban and urban settings.
The firms said they are still keeping an eye on demand and scheduling further deployments in underprivileged regions.
