Holding alts long-term is like my old mother with her gold cross that she bought as an investment in the 70s. You have to sell these markets to make money. The volatility doesn't smooth out when you move to a larger time frame, it scales. In addition they are highly cyclic. Maybe because really they are all embedded inside of Bitcoin's market dominance and like desert flowers bloom in Bitcoin's nourishing waters. Maybe because the universe is well-modeled by chaos theory. Maybe because they are all manipulated and run like clockwork. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. But who cares.
